The new album “The Inward Song” with the quartet of Berlin-Based saxophonist Christian Weidner is praised anthem-like in all professional magazines.
The jazzthetik, for example, writes: “A band at its best...”,
and the FonoForum: “Marked by lyrical gesture and going into oneself, Christian Weidner music unfolds great strength”.
Already the albums title is program: it’s about going into oneself, about “inner hearing”. This, however, does not lead to narcissistic sound bathing, but rather unveils a magical effect through the precision set free by listening to one another.
This allows for example the use of the fine nuanced play of Colin Vallon with his partly modified piano for musical interaction, what otherwise would have been an isolated effect.
Also, the “amazing fusion of sound, including the wonderful unisono passages of Weidners horn and Sieverts arcobass” (Henning Bolte in the Jazzthetik) are only possible, because this band reacts with great openness to the free valences of the momentarily created sound; in other words, they simply and just make music.
